Training & On the Job
The Cadet program combines hands-on training at the WA Police Academy with real experience working alongside Police Officers across metropolitan Western Australia.
The Cadet pathway is intended to prepare individuals for potential transition into becoming a Police Recruit, providing necessary skills and knowledge to excel as a future Officer. This journey begins at the WA Police Academy, alongside Police Recruits and Recruit Auxiliary Officers.
Cadets undertake a two-week course at the WA Police Academy, where they learn how to use policing systems and communication skills vital for their time working with Police Officers. Cadets do not receive any legal training.
On commencement of training at the WA Police Academy, Cadets must be 17 years of age.
The WA Police Academy is located 30km from Perth CBD in the northern suburb of Joondalup. Limited parking is available on site and in the surrounding areas.

The Cadet Program is twelve months in duration, with the potential to extend up to a maximum of 24 months. Cadets may be recommend to begin their transition to Police recruiting from six-months into the program.
Cadets assist with a range of administrative and station tasks while on the job, aimed at increasing their knowledge and skills of policing in Western Australia.
Following their training, Cadets are deployed throughout metropolitan Western Australia to assist Police Officers, Auxiliary Officers and Staff with various duties.
The duties a Cadet may be involved in include front counter roles, administrative duties, vehicle servicing, receiving and disposing lost, found, seized or stolen property, equipment restoking, creating incident reports, conducting patrols, attending incidents and more. Cadets may also be required to assist with Recruiting events, or events supported by the WA Police Force.
Cadets are required to complete the Cadet Development Portfolio while they are stationed in the workplace, which gives evidence to their ability to perform required workplace tasks.
Cadets are also required to complete fortnightly Physical Training at the WA Police Academy throughout their tenure, where they will be tested against the Police Physical Performance Evaluation.
