Your community. Your voice. Your police

The WA Police Force is dedicated to building a workplace that reflects diversity and inclusion. A key part of this commitment is actively encouraging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to join our team.

When you become part of our Blue family, you won’t be on your own. We recognise that starting somewhere new or being away from your mob can be challenging, and we’re here to support you through it all.

From the recruitment process to your training at the Academy and throughout your policing career, our focus is on ensuring you feel welcomed, respected, and supported at every stage of your journey.

Acting Sergeant Eric Gibson

"Our cultural roots give us a unique perspective and a deep connection to community. That understanding helps us communicate more effectively and build trust, especially in situations where others might struggle to connect."

Keeping the community safe

Understanding the complexities of being Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, and being able to effectively communicate with multiple communities, plays an important role in policing in Western Australia.

The Yarning App

The WA Police Force designed and developed a mobile app to improve fairness and equality to Aboriginal communities state-wide during interactions with police officers.

The app allows officers to select an Aboriginal language and play aloud key messages to improve understanding by Aboriginal people who have English as a second (third or fourth) language.

Yarning Circle

The Yarning Circles provide a safe space for open dialogue and the sharing of culture.

At the WA Police Force Academy, we use Yarning Circles to build better understanding and stronger relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

These gatherings encourage listening, sharing stories, and learning from one another in a way that supports reconciliation and trust.
