Your questions answered

How is regional policing different to metropolitan areas?

As a Police Officer in a country town, you will handle nearly all aspects of policing which will enable you to gain a great deal of experience in a variety of roles.

Like most frontline positions, you will often be amongst the first to attend crime scenes and traffic crashes and respond to public calls for help. You will also become an integral asset to the community by being actively involved with places like schools to tackle crime and safety.

Is there a minimum period I would need to serve in one location?

Yes, there is a minimum period of two years required at most locations.

When can I apply to move to a regional location?

You can apply within weeks prior to graduating the academy or at anytime from a Metropolitan Station.

Can I take my family with me?

It is strongly encouraged that you move with your family and become part of the community in which you live and work.

If I need to relocate, will my accommodation and expenses be covered?

When working in regional locations, there are many additional financial benefits. All areas receive benefits for relocation costs and storage fees. Other benefits like free/subsidised housing, air-conditioning subsidy, district allowance (fortnightly payment), additional leave and remote community leave will be based on the location.

Do I have to find my own house in the town I move to?

With the exception of Bunbury and Australind, there is Government subsidised housing in all regional locations and you will be allocated a house in the location you are moving to.

Is the Government housing good quality?

Yes. There are specific criteria the housing must meet to be a Government Regional Officer House (GROH) and are well maintained.

How do the attraction payments work?

The attraction payments are a one-off (taxed) payment which you will receive when you arrive at your new work location. The amount differs from location to location and higher payments are offered for hard to fill locations.

Do I need specific training or skills to work in Regional WA?

No. You will learn all the necessary skills during your time at the Academy and all further skills are learnt on the job which makes Policing such an exciting career. The most important skills are your interpersonal and communication.

Serving in Regional WA provides you the ability to accelerate your learning across a broad range of tasks, more so than Policing in the Metro area.
