When you pass the required training, including work placement, you will be ready to start your new career as a Custody Support Officer. Custody Support Officers will be placed in a metropolitan location, unless otherwise specified, and are required to complete a nine-month probationary period.

Responsibilities of a Custody Support Officer

Custody Officers are responsible for the safe, secure and lawful management of persons in custody, ensuring detainee welfare. 

On the job, Custody Support Officers will be responsible for:

  • Managing the admission, supervision and release of detainees.
  • Conducting searches and managing detainee property.
  • Identifying and managing risks, including medical, mental health and self-harm concerns.
  • Monitoring detainee welfare through regular observations and checks.
  • Responding to incidents, including managing non-compliant detainees.
  • Preparing and maintaining accurate custody records.
  • Liaising with police officers, hospitals, mental health services and other external agencies.
  • Assisting with the transport or transfer of detainees where required.
Salary & Benefits

Wondering how much you'll get paid on the job as a Custody Support Officer? After Graduation, Custody Support Officers will receive a pay increase, and will receive pay increases as their experience grows.

Working Shifts

Working within a team, Custody Support Officers will be assigned 8 hour or 10 hour shifts. These shifts will cover day shift, afternoon shift, evening shift and night shift, across all days of the week.

Regional Placements

In Regional WA, Custody Support Officers play a critical frontline role in supporting policing operations across a diverse and often remote environment, where access to external services may be limited. Regional positions are offered on a 12-month contact basis, and housing is not provided.

Regional placements are currently being offered in Broome, Kununurra, Geraldton, Kalgoorlie, Bunbury, Albany, Karratha and Northam.
