If you're thinking about applying to join the WA Police Force and you have tattoos, you’re not alone and yes, you can apply.

We understand that tattoos are a form of personal expression, and having one (or more) won’t automatically rule you out. However, like many workplaces, we have guidelines in place to make sure all officers present a professional image to the community.

Here’s how it works:

If you progress from the initial Integrity Checks, a review of any tattoos that may be visible when wearing a short sleeve shirt including those located on the neck, face or hands will be undertaken.

Applicants are required to provide clear, colour photographs of their tattoos whilst wearing a collared short sleeve shirt when submitting their application.

Tattoo standards are contained within the WA Police Force Commissioner’s Uniform and Appearance Manual and consideration of tattoos is given in regard to whether they are:

  • in a prohibited location
  • prohibited form
  • detract from a professional appearance.

So, what’s not allowed?

  • Tattoos on the face are not permitted.
  • Tattoos that depict drugs, death, or violence are likely to be considered unsuitable (if they are visible) when wearing a short sleeve shirt.
  • Tattoos on the neck or hands will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

What’s considered?

All other tattoos will be assessed based on their:

  • Location
  • Size
  • Imagery

We want to ensure all officers reflect the values and professionalism of the WA Police Force, while still recognising that individuality matters.
